Hello,
dear readers that are about to watch me fangirl and gush nonsense about this
book. I know you won’t mind the actual fangirling, so I’ll just do my best to
persuade you into picking up this book because it’s worth it. It’s called The Selection and, trust me, it’s
down-right amazing.

Iwent in with high expectations, because everyone is raving about this series.
And the beginning kind of disappointed me, since nothing interesting is really
happening and I believed that I won’t enjoy it as much as I thought. But, oh,
how wrong I was. The second the pace speeds up, things really get going and it
made up for the lack of action from the first part. But I’m not saying there
was much action, because we do have thirty-five wannabe princesses in the
centre of attention and you can’t really expect them to do the dirty work with
their own hands. *wink*
I’ll
start with the plot, but I have to explain the background a bit. We have a
dystopian world that’s well described by the author, its society being divided
in 8 groups, or if you want, social statuses. The Eights are the homeless
people, the Sevens and Sixes are the servants, the Fives and Fours have more
respect but still not enough and the Threes and Twos are soldiers, celebrities
or wealthy and educated people. And last, but not least, we have the Ones. The
royal breed. The monarchs. The most powerful people in the whole country of
Ilea. The selection is a program meant to find a wife for the next King, Prince
Maxon Schreave, and thirty-five girls were chosen “randomly” to
participate in the race for the prince’s heart, the crown and, of course, the
reins to the entire kingdom. Chosen to become a One.

Oneof these girls is our main character, America Singer. She’s a Five, she’s an
artist and she’s probably the only one that didn’t intend to enter the
competition. Intelligent, stubborn, talented and brave, she sets things clear
with the prince right from the beginning: she’s not here for any romantic
involvement — she just wants time to mend her broken heart. But they easily
become friends and you can see something stronger is brewing between them at
the horizon. Their friendship is so honest and awe-inspiring, I kept making a
goofy smile whenever they were together.

I
really liked America. I might have not agreed with some of her decisions, but
all in all, she was devoted, strong and admirable. She’d make a great queen and
I really hope that will be her future. Which brings me to my next point —
Maxon.

Ifyou haven’t noticed yet, I’m team Maxon all the way! He won my heart with his
honesty, calm demeanor and easy smiles. You can see he wants what’s best for
his people and he’d do everything in his power to make everyone happy.
Ambitious, but sometimes underestimated by his relatives, he’s a selfless young
leader. I also have to mention that he’s polite, funny, dedicated and
all-around romantic and swoon-worthy. What more could you wish for? *sigh*
But
in addition to Maxon, we have the one that broke America’s heart. Aspen Leger.
A Six that is smitten with our heroine, but afraid that he’ll never give her
the world she should have. He’s intense, sexy and impulsive, but smart and
brave all-together. Although him and America hit a bumpy road in the first
part, they reunite after a little twist comes into place. I really liked him,
but Maxon just captured me in a different way and it pains me to say that both
guys could get the girl quite easily, because their shots at winning her heart
are equal at the moment.

side characters were developed nicely. There are some I want to find more
about, like Marlee (I can’t trust her completely for some reason), the maids (I
loved them) and Maxon’s parents. And there are some that need to be taken out
of the picture ASAP, like Celeste.

Now,
as a side note, I’d like to comment on the usual comparison with The Hunger Games. Besides the fact that
the main action in both centers on a competition and they have a somewhat
similar love triangle, these two couldn’t be more different. In THG, we have
dead children, violence and a lot of gore, whereas in The Selection we have fancy dresses, parties and shallow girls. THG
is quite a violent treat, while The
Selection is a light, funny, romantic read.

this book made me happy and content, but managed to keep me at the edge of my
seat at the same time. Kiera Cass is definitely on my auto-buy list from now on
and this book is among my favorites. Plus, the ending makes me eager for more
development in the love triangle.

The Selection deserves the hypearound it. It captured my attention completely, made me smile so much my cheeks
hurt and stole my heart in the romance department. It’s full of intrigue,
mysteries not yet explained and explores the feelings behind true love and
friendships. It has the perfect blend of fantasy, dystopia and romance to make
itself addictive. This is a book not to be missed and I can’t wait to dive into
the sequel! Yippy!
