Bully (Fall Away #1) by Penelope Douglas
We’re neighbors, and once, we were best friends. But then, one summer, he
turned on me and has made it his mission to screw up my life at every
opportunity. I’ve been humiliated, shut out, and gossiped about all through
high school. His pranks and rumors got more sadistic as time wore on, and I
made myself sick trying to hide from him. I worried about what was around every
corner and behind every door.
So I left.
I spent a year studying abroad and bathed in the freedom of life without Jared.
Now I’m back to finish up high school and get the hell out of here forever. I’m
hoping that after a year of breathing room, he’s moved on and forgotten all
But even if he hasn’t changed, I have. I’m not interested in avoiding him or
turning the other cheek anymore. We’re going to go head to head, because
neither of us wants to back down.

that’s right. I pulled an all-nighter. Again. But who am I to brag if there are
these amazing books to maintain my interest? Heck, keep ’em coming cause I sure
as hell don’t mind. *innocent smile*
even know what to begin with. I devoured every word from this book and right
now I could go re-read it without a problem, because it’s just that good. Tate
and Jared have been best friends in their childhood, but after the summer
before freshman year, Jared came back from spending time with his dad
completely changed. Cruel. Hateful. Angry. Tate didn’t know what was the reason
behind his behavior, only that Jared’s daily goal was to make her miserable.
Spreading awful rumors, ruining her chance at a good high school life and
always ready to embarrass her. But after a year abroad in France, Tate comes
home ready to stand her own and not let Jared messing her senior year. If only

asked, “Do you know what this is?” I took my middle finger and patted
the corner of my eye with it. “It’s me, wiping away the last tear you’ll ever
loved Tate! She’s a tough chick, but nonetheless my heart just broke for her
countless times, especially for the confusion she felt over how she lost her
best friend. Tate is such a lovely and grounded person! She’s smart, ambitious,
caring, honest and all I wanted to do was give her hugs and cheer her up.

Jared was the greatest. He was sweet, generous, and friendly. And the most

turned out to be a disappointment. She was supposed to be Tate’s best friend,
but in reality she was a crappy one most of the time. I’d still feel betrayed and
abandoned if I were Tate.
really now, all of the characters were complex. Madoc, who I can’t wait to know
more about in the sequel, is a hell of a lot interesting and I can also say I
ended up liking him. Maybe even too much. Oh, and I have to mention Piper and
Nate. Someone needs to shove something up their asses. *prepares for battle*
I actually loved was the relationship between Tate and her Dad. It’s such a
rarely approached thing in books to experience this kind of honesty and trust
with your parents. It was really heart-warming.
I’m forgetting something. Or avoiding a certain topic. Ah, well, screw it.
Let’s talk about the hottie.
a tormented, broken boy that just pulls on your heartstrings and begs you to
love him. He has so many layers behind that cold and controlled exterior. In the
beginning, he’s a top-notch cruel asshole. But we get to see a new loving side
of him — granted, much further in the story, but I’ll take what I can get. He
has painful secrets. He’s overwhelmingly intense. Drool-worthy gorgeous. And

go on and on about him. Jared is one of those fiction characters that capture
your heart. One of the misunderstood bad boys. Confident. Cocky. Popular.
Respected. He’ll have you fall in love with him in no time.
As much as I tried, I could never erase you from my heart. That’s why I was
such an asshole and kept guys away from you. You were always mine.”
I ended up loving Jared, I still can’t forgive him that easily as Tate did. I
understand where he’s coming from, but it’s no excuse for how extreme and wrong
his methods were. I want him and Madoc to treat Tate like a princess for the
hell they’ve put her through. Also, I NEED Jared’s POV to make me trust him
completely. I have a feeling that book will be gut-wrenching.

that last 50 pages or so? All gods above, I didn’t expect that. That was such a
low blow. Asdfghjkl. I got seriously angry, because I was on cloud nine, in my
personal bubble of happiness with all things Jared and Tate and then BAM! But I
have to admit, it did trigger character development, so Tate became stronger
and respected as well. Plus, their relationship got more solid based on that
event, because Tate’s insecurities about Jared were finally brought to the
surface. Her emotional break-down let loose all her feelings that piled up over
the years. Hopelessness. Fear. Embarrassment. Frustration. Anger. Loss.

feel every fiber of betrayal and it took me on a rollercoaster that had my
feelings all over the place. I guarantee it’s an emotional read that you won’t

Douglas managed to create a wonderful story of redemption and true love.
Friendships were tested, mysteries were uncovered and limits were crossed, but
it all came down to how much power love can give you. And how in certain
moments, it can shatter your soul. I’m definitely her fan and she’s on my
auto-buy list from now on!
being said, I cannot recommend Bully
enough. It’s unique, original, different from everything else in the New Adult
genre. It’s a bittersweet tale about best friends turned enemies turned lovers
and it’s incredibly well-written. Abso-freaking-lutely one of my favorite books
of the year.
